How to Create Your Own U of T Homepage

Preliminary Stuff

  1. Go to https://www.utorid.utoronto.ca/
  2. Click on "change options".
  3. Enter your UTORid and password (the ones you use to check your utoronto email).
  4. In the table that appears, you will see what your homepage address is.
  5. If this is the first time you set this up, you can change your address in the "Individual Web Space" option at the bottom of the page.

Creating your Homepage

  1. Open MS Word. 
  2. Create your homepage as you would like it to be.
  3. To insert a picture, in the main menu choose Insert->Picture->From File and choose the file that you would like to insert. 
  4. Save the file in the following way: Open the Save dialog box; in the "Save as Type" drop box choose "Web Page (*.htm; *.html)"; then, in the "File name" drop box write the word "index". Press "Save"
  5. A file with the name "index.htm" will be created in your folder. In addition, a folder with the name "index_files" will also be created.

Uploading Your Files to the Internet

  1. Open "My Computer". 
  2. In the address bar enter "ftp://individual.utoronto.ca". (If you don’t see an address bar in which you can type, go to the menu and choose View->Toolbars->Address Bar.)
  3. A dialog box will appear asking your username and password. Enter your UTORid and password (the ones you use to check your utoronto email)
  4. In another window, open the folder in which you saved the file index.htm.
  5. Drag the file "index.htm" from your folder to the ftp folder your have opened in step 3.
  6. Drag the folder "index_files" from your folder to the ftp folder your have opened in step 3.
  7. Note: All the files that you upload to the Internet should not have white spaces in their name. If they have a white space in their name, the upload will fail. For example "my file.doc" is a bad name, because it has a space in it, but "my_file.doc" is a good name.
  8. Congratulations! You have a new homepage.
