Institute Facilities
Main Office
We are lucky to have very friendly and helpful office staff.
- Muna Salloum (a.k.a. "Miracle Worker")
handles faculty and budget matters and office administration.
- Denise Horsley is
our administrative assistant, who
looks after student and course matters and provides academic assistance
(including administering fellowships and TAships). If you have any
questions about anything, you can ask Denise; she is an information
wizard.
In September you will be given several keys. The first is a key card to
the building ("Old Vic"), which will prove its use when you want to get
the readings for courses or if you want to work on evenings and on
weekends, but it only opens the south-east door into the basement (the
ramp close to Pratt Library). Another key card will open the door to
the photocopier area. Finally, you will be issued a sub-master key for
access to the Common Room and Library. There is a $15 deposit for the
keys, refundable when you return them. Please make sure that all doors
remain locked and be careful about leaving your valuables around -
thefts have occurred.
Common Room and Carrel Room
There is usually coffee and tea (and sometimes hot chocolate) available
in the Common Room (bring your own mug) for 25 cents a cup (30 cents
with cream. Tea bags are usually available and hot chocolate sometimes
is. The coffee coordinator (elected in September, see here) This room
is equipped with couches, student mailboxes, a table, microwave,
recycling bins and piano (no guarantee on the tuning) - it's where most
IHPST social events happen. If you're looking for a study break or just
somewhere to hang out, many IHPST students bring their lunches to the
common room, so join us!
The common room has a direct telephone line: (416) 978-7432. (Students
can take messages for one another, if you aren't around to receive a
call.)
In September, students are assigned carrels (students usually sharing,
two to a carrel) in a room adjacent to the Common Room. Although this
might sound crowded, it's quite good as compared to other gradua
te
studies at U of T. Since everyone has different schedules, conflicts
over carrel space are actually pretty rare, and usually easily
resolved. Ideally the carrel room is to be used for quiet study space,
so try to keep the conversation to a minimum.
Photocopies and Computers

A photocopy machine is available at
the Institute. You will get your own code and the charge is 5 cents a
copy; you will be billed monthly. In the carrel room there
are 3
PCs which are connected to the Internet and have MS Office
installed, a laser printer, a scanner and a CD burner.
